A variety of asteroid-inhabiting snake species are discovered during a mining operation. Their venom is a unique organic compound which genetically modifies human DNA, imbuing them with abilities and powers previously believed to be superhuman.

Corporate power eventually regresses due to civil war style in-fighting, and we are left with humans scattered across the near part of the solar system all hopped up on snake juice and vying for the limited resources left behind.
